SANTA ANA, Calif. – The Santa Ana College Kinesiology & Athletics Department has named Karlee Rivera and Jay Edwards Student-Athletes of the Month of February 2018. Both individuals had some great performances on the field, helping their teams get off to good starts in the first month of competition.
Rivera, a freshman infielder from Savannah High School, leads the Dons in hits with 24 and batting average at .436. She usually bats in the leadoff spot for the Dons, giving them solid at bats and production from the top of the lineup. So far, Rivera ranks fifth in the Orange Empire Conference in hits and ninth in batting average. While being successful on the field, Rivera has also excelled in the classroom as she was named a 2017-18 Scholar-Athlete for having a 3.0 or above grade point average during the Fall 2017 semester.
On the men's side, Jay Edwards has earned the honors for Student-Athlete of the Month with an impressive start to his season. Edwards leads not only his team but the state in wins with six on the season. The sophomore from Villa Park has a 1.56 earned run average in 17.1 innings while averaging 9.87 strikeouts per nine innings. He has been the anchor for the Dons pitching staff, appearing in nine out of the 16 games this season, helping Santa Ana to a 10-6 start.
