Homer Beatty

Coach, Football, Class of 2004

For 29 years, the late Homer Beatty served as the head football coach at Porterville High School, Bakersfield High School, Bakersfield College, Santa Ana College, Los Angeles State and the Orange County Ramblers where he compiled on overall coaching record of 189-35-3.

For four years, Beatty patrolled the sidelines at Santa Ana College leading the Dons to a pair of Eastern Conference football championships (1961 and 1962) and the college’s third national title (1962).

In an article published in the Orange County Sports Hall of Fame Guidebook, Beatty cites the 1962 Santa Ana College football team as the best he’s every coached.

“I’ve always said it was the best I’ve every had,” said the former Dons mentor. “If I could have taken that entire team to any four-year college, we would have won two more national titles.”
Beatty led the 1962 Dons to a perfect 10-0 record and a 20-0 win over Columbia Basin of Pasco, Washington in the Junior Rose Bowl.

Since 1916, Beatty, Bill Cook and Edward Hummel are the only three football coaches to lead a Santa Ana College football team to an undefeated season.

Beatty prepped at Bakersfield High School before playing running back for legendary football coach Howard Jones at USC from 1934-36. Following his collegiate career, he played professionally for the Los Angeles Bulldogs in the late 1930’s and for the Santa Ana Army Air Base team in 1942.
