Athletic Trainer, Class of 2009

George Curtis served as the head athletic trainer at Santa Ana College from 1973-1985. During his time at SAC he established the first associate’s degree program in athletic training at the community college level in the United States. He also helped design and oversee the construction of the new athletic training facility while establishing the female athletic trainers program.

Curtis also wrote and published a taping reference manual and started an adaptive physical education class.

Following his tenure at Santa Ana College, Curtis was the president of the South Coast Conference Athletic Trainers Association, the Utah Athletic Trainers Association as well as the Mountain West Conference Athletic Trainers Association during his time at Snow College, Southern Utah University and Brigham Young University.

Curtis was later named to the Utah Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame, the Southern Utah University “Coaching Factory” Hall of Fame, the District 7 Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame and the Brigham Young University Hall of Fame.

Curtis received several honors including the National Athletic Trainers Association Service Award in 1996, the Special Recognition Award for career success and achievement at Southern Utah and the Outstanding Football Athletic Trainer of the Year Award from the All American Football Foundation.
