Alzonzo Jamison is one of just three men’s basketball players to have his number retired by Santa Ana College after leading the Dons to a 25-8 mark and an appearance in the Southern California Regional finals in 1987-88.
The Santa Ana Valley High School graduate led Santa Ana College in rebounds with 277 and was second on the team in scoring with 650 points as a freshman. Jamison was named the Orange Empire Conference Player of the Year following the regular season and shared the California Community College State Player of the Year honors with Columbia College’s Jerry Anderson. His 650 points in a season currently ranks 13th in school history.
Before coming to Santa Ana College, Jamison averaged 25.5 points for Santa Ana Valley and was a two-time All-Orange County selection. He led Orange County in field goal percentage as a junior and was the Falcons’ top rebounder in his final two seasons.
After playing one year for Santa Ana College and head coach Dana Pagett, Jamison transferred to the University of Kansas where he played for Roy Williams, who is now the head men’s basketball coach at the University of North Carolina.
While at Kansas, Jamison scored 767 points (9.6 avg.) and grabbed 407 (4.8 avg.) rebounds in two and one-half seasons. He finished his career ranked third in field goal percentage (.580) and fourth in steals (175). Jamison scored a career-high 26 points against Arkansas in the 1991 Southeast Regional Tournament while garnering the regional’s Most Outstanding Player honors. He set a Kansas record with eight steals against Pepperdine and was recognized by ABC analyst Dick Vitale, now with ESPN, as one of the top five defensive players in college basketball during his senior season.
