Dons Battle Back Late in Win Over Grossmont 4-3

SANTA ANA- The Dons welcomed the 2017 season with a 4-3 win against Grossmont College in their home opener. This is the second season for Tom Nilles as the Head Coach for Santa Ana College.

Sophomore pitcher Guillermo Sanchez struck out the Griffin's first at bat to start the game. Grossmont used the second inning to score in three runs, but then the Dons defense held of the Griffins the rest of the game.

During the second inning, the Dons' offense dominated. Bryan Leef and Bobby Vasquez each singled while advancing Ricardo Salinas all the way to third base. Then Erick Leef was hit by a pitch for the RBI to advance Salinas home.

Salinas also scored the second run for the SAC after Erick Leef advanced from an error by Grossmont's pitcher in the fourth inning.

The Dons were trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh, when the offense loaded the bases. After a Grossmont fielding error, the Dons were able to score in two runs to take the lead and the win.

Dons baseball will play again on Thursday, Feb. 02 at EC-Compton Center in their second non-conference game at 2 p.m.
