Dons Survive in 6-5 Win Over Saddleback

SANTA ANA, Calif. – The Santa Ana baseball team pulled out another close victory with a 6-5 win against the Saddleback Gauchos in game two of their Orange Empire Conference series.

As usual, the Don bats came alive later in the ball game as they took the lead in the sixth inning with five runs.

Derek Sims got things rolling with an RBI single in a bases loaded situation to bring the score to 4-2. James Williams followed that with a line drive to the left field corner, bringing home two more to tie the game at 4-4.

With runners at second and third, the Dons scored the go ahead run on a wild pitch and then capped the inning with another RBI single, this time from Frank Garcia.

The Gauchos responded in the seventh inning with one more run but couldn't overcome the arms coming out of the Santa Ana bullpen, leading to a 6-5 victory for the Dons.

Jack Owens earned his third win of the year, going two innings with two earned runs and two strikeouts.

But when the Dons needed some clutch outs they went to Nathan Cachu, who recorded his second save of the season after forcing a 543 ground ball double play in the ninth to secure the win.

Santa Ana stays within a game of first place in the Orange Empire Conference standings at a record of 20-9, 10-4.
