Dons Host the Orange Empire Conference Track & Field Championships

SANTA ANA - The Santa Ana College Dons are hosting the Orange Empire Conference Championships with the preliminaries held today at the John Ward Track & Field.

Of the 22 events ran, 10 were finals with a pair of records set. Riverside City College's Jessika Byrd broke her own record in the women's hammer throw as she claimed the conference championship with a throw of 57 meters while Riverside's John Guzman-Aguilar set the record in the 10K as he crossed the finish line in a time of 30:01, breaking the previous record by 10 seconds.

Overall, seven of the 10 finals were claimed by Riverside as the Tigers won the women's discus throw, the men's shot put, the women's hammer throw, the men's high jump, the women's pole vault, the women's 10K and the men's 10K.

Golden West College won the women's long jump while Orange Coast College won the men's and women's 3,000 meter steeplechase to round out the other finals ran.

The remaining finals will be settled next Friday, April 26, again at Santa Ana College. Field events begin at 10:00 a.m. while running events start at 2:00 p.m.
