Dons Drop Home Opener to Palomar 76-61

SANTA ANA- The Dons lost their first home game of the season 76-61 to Palomar College in a non-conference game. This was the first game of the 2016-17 season for the Dons (0-1) and Palomar (1-0).

Sophomore Taylor Ivicevic opened the game with a jump shot to score the first points for SAC. Palomar answered back with a three-pointer. Then sophomore Alysia Gamboa scored for the Dons with a jump shot. Towards the end of the quarter, sophomore Lauren Fruto rounded out the score for the Dons by making two free throws, but Palomar would reclaim the 30-20 lead for the first quarter.

The second quarter opened with freshman Angela Rodriguez scoring three points for the Dons. Then Amy Talavou scored her first jump shot. The Dons started to creep back up against the Comets with the help of Alysia Gamboa and Lauren Fruto. Gamboa closed out the 41-38 half by making both free throws for SAC.

Sophomore Blaysen Varnbadoe showed her strength by powering through the third quarter with five points under her belt. In the fourth quarter, the Comets outscored the dons 15-9, with Ivicevic scoring 3 of the 9 points in the fourth quarter for SAC.

Varnadoe and Ivicevic finished with a game-high of thirteen points each, as the only two Dons in double digits.

Women's basketball will play again on Friday, Nov. 4 against Santa Monica College at 5:30 p.m.
