Dons Volleyball Splits in the 2017 SAC Quad

SANTA ANA, Calif. – The Dons Volleyball team hosted the 2017 Santa Ana College Quad on Wednesday afternoon. The four teams included were Santa Ana College, Orange Coast College, Cerro Coso College and Victor Valley College.

Santa Ana matched up with Cerro Coso to start the quad off, taking the match 3-1 (17-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-18). Cerro Coso came out ready to play and handed the Dons a 25-17 loss in the first set. After refocusing, SAC cruised to three straight set wins.

Mikelle Taylor posted 12 kills, three service aces and four digs in the match, while Dianna Nguyen chipped in with seven kills, six digs and an ace.

In their next match, the Dons flipped the script and started with a 25-17 win of the first set against Victor Valley. The Rams responded to the challenge and took the next two, each by a score of 25-18.

Santa Ana wasn't done yet, as they took the fourth set 25-20 to force a winner takes all fifth set.

The Dons found themselves down 12-3 in the fifth but the fought to stay alive, cutting the lead to four by match point. The late push wasn't enough for the Dons, as they fell to Victor Valley 3-2 (21-25, 25-18, 25-18, 20-25, 15-10).

Mikelle Taylor led the way once again with a 22 kill performance and freshmen Uchenna Ozokwo stepped up with 10 kills of her own.

Santa Ana College will host another quad on Friday afternoon starting at 2:00 p.m. Admission will be free.
