Heath Bell left his mark on the Santa Ana College record books over the course of his two seasons with the Dons.

As a freshman in 1997, Bell set the SAC record for fewest runs allowed at 20 and fewest walks allowed at four. He also set the record for most appearances, 27, which stood until 2007.

The records he set as a freshman garnered him All-Orange Empire Conference honors as he was named the Orange Empire Conference Co-Pitcher of the Year after finishing 8-0 with a 2.17 ERA and 68 strikeouts.

Following his sophomore campaign, Bell set career records for fewest walks allowed at 23 and saves at 12. He still holds the record for fewest walks allowed but his saves record was surpassed in 2006.

Bell was drafted out of Santa Ana College by the New York Mets and later made his Major League Baseball debut with the Mets in 2004. He later joined the San Diego Padres where he replaced Trevor Hoffman as the team’s closer. In 2009, Bell led the National League in saves while being selected to the National League All-Star Team, a feat he duplicated in 2010.
