Bob Delaney ran into the record books at Santa Ana College from 1962-1964 competing in track and field and cross country for the Dons. He was a two-time conference champion in cross country and set the 3-mile National Junior College record in 1962 with a time of 14:37.6. 

In his two seasons of track and field at Santa Ana , Delaney was a two-time conference champion, a two-time Southern California champion and a two-time state champion in the one-mile. In 1964, he was the conference champion and state champion in the two-mile. 

Delaney set national records in the one-mile (4:05.4), two-mile (8:57.4), four-man two-mile relay (7:32.4) and four-man four-mile relay (17:13.9). He was selected as the Santa Ana College Athlete of the Year and Bill Cook Athlete of the Year twice. In 1964, Delaney was selected as the National Junior College Athlete of the Year by the Track and Field News. 

Delaney later attended Brigham Young University from 1964-1966, where he earned All-American status in both cross country and track and field. He was the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) champion in the one-mile in 1965 and 1966 and finished second in the WAC in cross country in both 1964 and 1965. 

In 1967-1968, Delaney was a member of the U.S. Army Track and Field and Cross Country teams and competed for the U.S. Army in the 1968 Olympic Trials, placing 5 th in the one-mile in a time of 4:00.0. Delaney also served as a member of the Santa Ana Police Department for 28 years and dedicated 31 years of combined active and reserve service to the California Army National Guard.
