Volleyball, Class of 2003

Dolly Kaawa-Bartlett led Santa Ana College to a National Championship in 1976 and to the first ever COA-sponsored women's volleyball championship in 1977. Kaawa-Bartlett was MVP of the state tournament as the Lady Dons defeated Saddleback College in the championship game. She was a major part in two undefeated years at Santa Ana College.

Nancy Warren, Kaawa-Bartlett's volleyball coach at SAC, was effusive in her praise of Kaawa-Bartlett, "She was the athlete coaches wait a lifetime for. She was talented, personable, a leader and a motivator. She was amazing. People caem to watch her athleticism." Warren compared Kaawa-Bartlett's prowess to that of Tigers Woods today. "She caught your eye like Tigers Woods does today. When he hits down on a shot the gallery says, 'Whoa, that's something special.' Dolly was like that, when she went up for a shot. She literally flew high and pounded her shot downs and people said whoa."

Kaawa-Bartlett went on to play two years at Long Beach State University (1977-80) and led the 49ers to a 19-10 record in 1979 and to the AIWAW regional tournament

"Dolly came to us from Hawaii out of high school, stayed here, married here and still lives here," said Warren. "She was awesome in all respects."
