After a brief stint in the US Navy, Carl Sawyer enrolled in classes at Santa Ana College in 1955 where he served as the sports editor and editor of SAC's student newspaper the El Don . 

Upon graduating from SAC, Sawyer transferred to USC where he was the sports editor of the Daily Trojan . In 1958, Sawyer joined the staff of the OC Register where he s pent 36 years (1958-1994) covering sports in Orange County . During that span, Sawyer reported on such sporting events as Pac-10 football including the Rose Bowl, horse racing, NCAA basketball finals and the Olympics in 1984 where he covered water polo, soccer and cycling. 

From 1960 to 1992 he wrote the sports column Sawdust. In 1958, he covered all 12 high schools and the only three junior colleges in Orange County (SAC, OCC, Fullerton ). 

During his time as a sports writer, he won 18 awards in Press Club competition, more than any other sports writer in the county. 

Sawyer has been a member of the Heisman Trophy selection committee since 1970. Sawyer has also had a vote for the All-American team and Coach of the Year award.
