RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Santa Ana College Softball outlasted the Riverside City Tigers (14-24, 4-12) to earn their first Orange Empire Conference win of the season on Monday afternoon.
The Dons (12-26, 1-15) had been on the opposite side of some close games over the last few weeks but they were able to put that behind them and find a way to win.
One of the biggest moments of the day came in the bottom of the seventh when the Tigers loaded the bases with just one out. Sophomore pitcher Julia Ariston was able to work her way out of the jam to avoid a walk-off, forcing batters into a couple of ground ball outs.
A couple innings later, the Dons were able to break through when Giordana Tully scored on a wild pitch. They followed that by scoring an insurance run thanks to an RCC error.
Although the Tigers were able to put some real pressure on their defense by scoring one and putting a runner at third, Santa Ana was able to close them out for a 4-3 victory.
Yasmine Garcia had the biggest day at the plate for the Dons, finishing with two hits, an RBI and a walk. Ariston picked up her third win in the circle, going five and a third innings while giving up just one run. Kalani Gonzales got the start and had a solid day after three and two third innings, conceding two runs.
SAC will play at Riverside once more on Tuesday before returning home to host the Tigers for sophomore day on Thursday afternoon.
