Toni Lopez Takes Third at State, Sets New SAC Record

Toni Lopez capped off her freshman year at Santa Ana College with a third-place finish in the 10,000 meter run at the 2016 CCCAA Track & Field State Championships held at San Diego Mesa College while also setting a new Santa Ana College record.

With her time of 37:45.44, Lopez ran past the previous SAC record of 38:13.62, set by Hilda Vasquez in 2002. The record, and the third-place finish, join a long list of accomplishments for Lopez this year.

In the fall, Lopez won three races during the cross country season. One of those three victories came at the Orange Empire Conference Championships when she claimed the first-ever women's cross country conference championship by a Santa Ana College runner.

Lopez began her SAC career by winning her first-ever collegiate event at the Palomar Invitational, before finishing second at the Southern California Preview Race and fourth at the Golden West Invitational. She then won her second event of the season in the Dons host event, the Brubaker Invitational. Lopez followed that up by being the highest-finishing community college runner at the Titan Invitational, while finishing seventh overall against mainly four-year competitors.

Her conference championship followed that event before she wrapped up her cross country season with a fifth-place finish at the SoCal Finals and a seventh-place finish at the CCCAA Cross Country State Championships.
