Dons Find Success at Soka Indoor Qualifier

SANTA ANA, Calif. – Santa Ana Track & Field competed in the Soka University Indoor Qualifier on Saturday afternoon.

Octavio Moreno, Eric Jimenez and Lizandro Hernandez all had impressive performances for the Dons.

Moreno, a freshman from Anaheim High, took first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.06, topping competitors from eight other schools including some four years. He also competed in the 60-meter hurdles and placed first in heat two with a time of 8.71.

Sophomore long distance runner, Eric Jimenez, placed first in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:03.25. In the mile run, he competed in the second heat and ran to a time of 4:51.74 for another top finish.

And freshman Lizandro Hernandez put up a time of 2.05 in the 800-meter event, taking home third place in the event.

For the women, Monique Azpeitia stood out for the Dons in the 800-meter run while Alexandria Owens Owens and Kara Lattimore had solid performances in sprints.

Azpeitia had a nice day, finishing on top in heat number two of the 800-meter run. The freshman was seventh overall in the field with a time of 2:35.23.

Alexandria Owens and Kara Lattimore competed in the 60-meter and 200-meter events. Owens ran an 8.14 in the 60-meter, coming in 6th for her heat and 13th overall. In the 200, she placed fourth in her heat and 12th overall with a time of 26.60. Lattimore followed her in both events, placing third in her heat and 23rd overall in the 60 at a time of 8.71, and then took 30th overall in the 200, running to a time of 28.68.

"I'm very proud of them and I'm glad their hard work is paying off," Head Coach Miriam Mitzel said. "But our ultimate goal is to represent SAC in the State Championships in as many events as possible".  

Santa Ana Track & Field continue the pursuit of that goal as they prepare for their first Orange Empire Conference meet at Riverside City College of February 23rd. The Dons will race against the Riverside City Tigers and the Saddleback Gauchos starting at 2:00 p.m.
