SAC Tops San Diego Mesa 84-60 to Advance in Tournament

SANTA ANA, Calif. – In the first day of the 2017 Santa Ana College Women's Basketball Tournament, the Dons advanced to the winner's bracket with an 84-60 win against San Diego Mesa College.

Santa Ana was in control for the whole 40 minutes, never trailing at any point of the game. They opened the game up with a 6-0 run and ended the first quarter with a 24-13 lead. The Dons kept their foot gas and extended their lead to 45-27 at the half.

The second half was more of the same, as the Dons overpowered San Diego Mesa and led by as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter.

SAC played well in many areas but what stood out most was the depth and balance they showed tonight. Five different players scored in double figures for the Dons including forwards Alexis Casillas and Cheryl Caldera who both recorded double-doubles. Casillas put up 16 points and 11 rebounds and Caldera followed with 14 points and 10 boards.

Freshmen Candace Black (15 pts), Alekzandra Peggins (12 pts) and Gianna Luna (10 pts) rounded out the Dons with double-digit points.

Santa Ana will match up with Moorpark, who defeated West Hills – Lemoore by a score of 58-42, on Friday night at 8:00 p.m. in the semi-finals of the tournament.
