Dons Host Annual Tournament, Finish 6th out of 13

SANTA ANA, Calif. –The Santa Ana College Wrestling team hosted its annual tournament on Saturday, Sept. 30th.  

With 51 points, Santa Ana took 6th place out of 13 teams that competed in the tournament. Three Dons finished in the top three of their weight class.

Sophomore Brandon Tierney took runner-up in the 174-pound weight class after earning a couple of technical falls to advance to the championship. He then fell to #2 seed in the weight class in Hector Vargas from Mt. SAC.

Jeremy Huang, a sophomore from El Modena High, placed third in the 141-pound class. Huang advanced in the championship bracket with an 8-2 win over Palomar's Jacob Jimenez. In the next round, he lost a close one to Brandon Rullen from Delta College by a score of 11 to 9. Huang worked his way through the consolation bracket with four more wins on the day, ending by defeating Rullen in a rematch.

Freshman Wolfgang Bernal took third place in the 157-pound weight class for the Dons. He started with two wins in the championship bracket before being defeated by the #1 seed in the weight class. Bernal finished the day by dominating his first opponent in the consolation bracket with a technical fall and then grabbing third place with a 10-4 win in the consolation championship.

The Dons saw some improvements from all their athletes and are looking forward to their next home match against Mt. SAC on Wednesday, Oct. 11th at 7:30 p.m.
