SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Santa Ana came into the South State Duals tournament as the #8 seed and faced off against #3 ranked in state and #1 seed Mt SAC, who they had just faced on Wednesday. Mt SAC ended up turning the heat and defeated the Dons by a score of 47-0, as the Dons were giving up three weight classes.
Santa Ana then ended up facing #5 seed West Hills where a pin by 125 pound wrestler Samuel Galdamez-Valle was a major deciding factor in the dual, giving the team the win over West Hills 27-24. Santa Ana thereby avenged dual losses to West Hills from earlier in the season. In the consolation semi-finals,
The Dons faced off against the #3 seed and host Palomar. While getting close, Santa Ana was unable to come up with enough wins and lost the dual 24-19.
In the dual for 5th place, Santa Ana wrestled against #6 seed Bakersfield, who was edged by #4 seed Rio Hondo. With both Santa Ana and Bakersfield double forfeiting at 165 and 184, plus a forfeit by Bakersfield at 149 and a forfeit by Santa Ana at 285, the dual started off on equal ground. The Dons won five out of the six matches that occurred in the dual to secure the win over Bakersfield 24-12, which also avenged an earlier season dual loss to Bakersfield, and gave the team 5th place. #2 seed Cerritos defeated #1 seed Mt SAC and proved why they are ranked #2 in the state behind Fresno City.
The top performer of the day was Wolfgang Bernal, who went 3-1 including a majority decision. SAC's female wrestler Polette Montano also got to wrestle an exhibition match against Rio Hondo's Melissa Estrada and won the match by fall in the first period. Santa Ana will be hosting Rio Hondo @ SAC Gymnasium on Wednesday, Oct. 18th at 7:00 p.m.
