Santa Ana Cross Country Takes on the Field at the UCR Highlander Invitational

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Santa Ana cross country program competed in the 2018 UC Riverside Highlander Invitational on Saturday morning. The Dons took on eight NCAA Division I teams as well as a handful of high quality NCAA Division II and CCCAA teams.

In the men's 8k race, Servando Aviles had a good showing as he placed 59th out 250 runners with a time of 25:51.3. The next Don to cross the finish line was Dalton Aviles, who clocked in at 26:33.5 for 112th place while Giovanni Barajas came in a few seconds later at 26:47.0 to take 124th. The men's team finished 17th out of the 20 teams competing.

The Dons also found some success in the women's 5k race, as Maria Marroquin led the way with a time of 20:00.9 to defeat many NCAA Division I runners to come in 137th place. Lucero Torres Calderon (20:26.2), Melissa Aguirre (21:06.0) and Monique Azpeitia (21:30.7) all were competitive as well, placing in the top 200 of the field. The women placed 19th out of 22 teams in the race.

Santa Ana will now prepare for the Orange Empire Conference Championships on Friday, October 26th at Riverside College.
