Dons Drop Opening OEC Series Against Cypress

SANTA ANA, Calif. - Despite showing  glimpses of the type of team they aspire to be, the Santa Ana College Softball team was ultimately swept by the No. 1 ranked Cypress Chargers in their first Orange Empire Conference series of the season.

In game one, the Dons fell by a score of 13-4 in five innings. SAC scored three runs in the fifth inning but it was just too little, too late.

Sarah Casey and Mia Luna recorded two hits apiece to lead the team while Mel Avila, Alyssa Armijo, Amaya Armenta and Haley Martinez added one each to total eight for the game.

The Dons pitching staff struggled with their control, walking 10 batters in four innings.

On Thursday, Santa Ana returned to Cypress and put together a much better performance.

Alexis Marquez and Ale Guzman conceded just two runs in six innings of work in the circle while the Dons offense actually out hit the Chargers, 6-3.

The only difference was the lack of timely hitting, as the Dons failed to score and left six on the bases throughout the game.

The series then shifted to Santa Ana College where the Dons hosted Cypress on Friday afternoon. Unfortunately, the score resembled more of game one than two, as SAC fell to the Chargers by a score of 12-1.

A season high of seven errors and 10 more walks led to a tough loss.

SAC will continue OEC play on Tuesday when they travel to Santiago Canyon College for game one against the Hawks. First pitch will be at 3:00 p.m.
