Dons Sweep Southwestern to Claim First Victory of the Season

SANTA ANA - The Santa Ana College volleyball team took a straight-set win over visiting Southwestern College in a non-conference match. The win lifts the Dons record to 1-2 on the season while Southwestern falls to 0-3.

The first set opened with a Fernanda Ruiz kill as the Dons went on to take an early 5-2 lead with Chloe Anderson adding four kills. Southwestern eventually came back to force ties at 7-7 and 8-8, but the Dons reclaimed the lead for good with a 3-0 run that included kills by Iliana Mendoza and Esther Arroyo. The set would eventually go to the Dons with a 25-16 score, behind five kills by Anderson.

The Dons took an early 3-0 lead in the second set with the first two points coming on kills by Anderson and Mendoza. The Jaguars answered with a 4-0 run to take their first lead at 4-3 before the teams played to ties of 4-4, 5-5, 6-6 and 7-7. It was the Dons again breaking the tie with a 3-0 run before extending their lead to 16-9. Southwestern would make a late run before the Dons held them off for the 25-21 win. The final point came on a Mendoza kill, one of her six kills in the set.

The Jaguars came out as the aggressor in the third game as they established an early lead of 10-3. But the Dons would slowly chip away at the lead before tying the set at 13-13. Hailey Johnson broke that tie with a service ace, giving the Dons the lead for good. Anderson resumed her early dominance as she added five more kills to her match total to help the Dons to a final set win of 25-18.

Anderson led the way with 12 kills followed by Mendoza with 10. Arroyo had five service aces, just ahead of Anderson with three, while Myriah Kunipo-Aguirre had 16 digs in the win.

The Dons hit the road for a pair of games as they play Rio Hondo College and Chaffey College on Friday, September 12 at Chaffey College. The match against Rio Hondo will be at 2 pm while the match against Chaffey is at 4 pm.
