Dons Top Pirates to Grab First Win in OEC Play

SANTA ANA, Calif. – Sunshine Townson got the call to start on Friday night and did not disappoint, as she went for 17 points in 20 minutes to help the Santa Ana women's basketball team to a 77-70 win over Orange Coast (0-12, 0-2).

The freshman from Pacifica High shot 6-9 overall and 5-8 from three to give the Dons (5-10, 1-1) another scoring threat from behind the arch. Townson did most of her damage in the first half, going a perfect 4-4 on threes, guiding the Dons to a 45-40 lead at the break.

Fellow freshman Nyla Bivens picked up the slack in the second half, scoring 10 of her 17 when it mattered most. Bivens went 7-14 for her 17 while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out four assists.

Cailey Vitug and Lexi Ross gave the Dons a different look in this one as they came off the bench to combine for 20 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.

Santa Ana used their depth to wear down the Pirates with a 32 to 3 advantage on bench points which allowed them to stretch the lead to 13 late in the second half. The Dons held on to win it and snap their two game losing streak.
