Dons End Season with a 3-0 Loss to Riverside City

The Santa Ana College (SAC) women's volleyball team ended the 2011 season with a straight-set loss to visiting Riverside City College. The final game scores were 25-18, 25-19 and 25-16.

The first game opened with neither team taking control of the game. As the two teams played up to a 12-12 there were 11 ties with the biggest belonging to Riverside (12-13, 5-9) at 8-6.

The Tigers broke the 12-12 tie with four-straight points to establish the largest lead of the game at 16-12. The Dons (1-19, 0-14) then answered with three-straight points to cut the Tigers lead to 16-15.

However, Riverside was able to go on a 9-2 run to close out the game and win by a score of 25-18 while establishing a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Dons opened the second game with a 5-0 run before building their lead up to 10-4. In that stretch, Melissa Arroyo accounted for four points with three kills and a block assist.

Riverside answered with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 10-10 before the teams traded ties to 12-12. The Dons then established leads at 15-13 and 16-14 before Riverside scored five straight points to take a 19-16 lead.

Arroyo snapped that run with a kill to pull the Dons within two at 19-17 before Riverside pulled out to a 24-17 lead. The Dons scored back-to-back points but their rally fell short as the Tigers won the game 25-19.

After the Dons battled back from an early 4-1 deficit to tie the third game 4-4, the Tigers jumped out to a 7-4 lead. The Dons answered with five of the next six points to claim their first lead of the game at 9-8.

Riverside came back to tie the game at 10-10 before jumping out to a 16-12 lead. The Tigers closed out the game, and the match, on a 9-4 run to win the game 25-16.
