Cross Country and Track & Field, Class of 2015

As a member of the Santa Ana College track & field team, William Delaney helped set a pair of national records while also placing high in both the conference and the state. William and his brother Bob, who was inducted into the SAC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009, set the Santa Ana College record for the two-man, 10-mile relay with a time of 43:43.2, well under the national mark of 44:10.2.

Delaney was also a member of the four-man, two-mile relay that set a national record with a time of 7:32.7. In 1964, Delaney took third place in the one-mile race at the Eastern Conference Finals before taking third place at the SoCal Finals and fourth place at the State Finals. In 1965, he improved his state finish to third place.

His time at Santa Ana College earned him All-American honors before receiving a scholarship to compete in cross country and track & field at Brigham Young University. Following his time at BYU, Delaney went on to become a track & field coach and was named the National Coach of the Year in 1975. Delaney’s involvement in track & field would continue as he served as an official for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
