Dons come up short in 5-4 loss to Pirates

SANTA ANA -- The Santa Ana College baseball team went back and forth with visiting Orange Coast College throughout the afternoon, but in the end, the Pirates pulled out a 5-4 win over the host Dons on Tuesday at Don Sneddon Field.

Daniel Delaney went 3-for-5 with two doubles, one run and one RBI to lead the Pirates (18-6, 7-4 in Orange Empire Conference). Cody Bruder, Chris Iriart and Ryan Perez each added two hits for Coast during Tuesday's 13-hit performance.

For the Dons (16-8, 7-4), Garret Brown went 2-for-5 with three RBI, while Alex Mascarenas, Ryan Aguilar, Nestor Lineras and Cody Bistline each added two hits each.

OCC starter Jacob Hill improved to 7-0 after allowing three runs on eight hits with one walk and four strikeouts over six innings. Dominic Purpura pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief to pick up his first save of the season.

SAC reliever Logan Roberts allowed one unearned run in two innings of relief to take the loss.

With the score tied at 3, the Pirates picked up a huge break when a between-pitch toss from the SAC catcher to the pitcher got away, allowing OCC's runner on third base (Delaney) to score, giving Coast the lead for good.

Cody Nulph singled in the top of the seventh and scored two batters later on an RBI-double to center by Delaney.

The Dons cut the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh when Mascarenas walked, advanced to second on a passed ball, went to third on a ground out by Aguilar and scored on an infield single by Brown.

In the bottom of the eighth, Cameron  Baronek led off with a walk for the Dons, advanced to second on a ground out by Josh Vargas and, on a dropped third strike, stole third and tried to score on the play, but was thrown out to keep the Pirates in front.

Santa Ana returns to action on Thursday at home against Fullerton (2 p.m.).
