SANTA ANA- The Dons fell short in their 2017 home opener 17-4 against the visiting College of the Canyons Cougars in a non-conference game. The four runs the Dons (2-1) scored in the first four innings weren't quite enough to overcome the 13 run lead built by the Cougars (1-0).

The Cougars opened the game with a home run to show that they were ready to play. They then had a pair of doubles and brought home two more girls before letting the Dons take the rest of the inning. Sophomore Kasey Hutton came in batting first for the Dons and with an error on the offense, she advanced to second. Kasey Hutton then stole third base before making it home as the first run for the SAC.

On offense, Kasey Hutton and freshman Alexis Marquez both scored from a double hit by sophomore Jynelle Pangelinan from Lakewood High School.
Jynelle Pangelinan shined again for the Dons in the bottom of the fourth inning to bring in Lyndra Fenald on an RBI and advance Kasey Hutton to second base. Canyons went on to score 14 more runs in the last innings to defeat the Dons 17-4.
Dons softball will play again on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at East Los Angeles College at 5:00 p.m.
