Dons Fall to Cerritos College in Straight Sets in Home Opener

SANTA ANA - Following their season opening loss at San Diego City College, the Dons dropped their home opener to Cerritos College in three sets. The final game scores were 25-22, 25-19 and 25-13.

Cerritos opened the match with a service ace and error to set an early 1-1 tie before the Dons scored three straight to take a 4-1 lead. After leading 7-4, the Dons surrendered three straight points as Cerritos tied the set 7-7 before an Alexandra Lopez kill gave the Dons the lead again at 8-7.

Cerritos answered with three straight points to take an 11-8 lead before the Dons came back with three-straight of their own to tie the set at 11-11, capped off by a Tori Sparks kill. The Falcons had another answer, recording three-straight points to take a 14-11 lead.

The Falcons held their lead up to 21-19 but back-to-back kills by Sparks and Michelle Nguyen tied the set at 21-21. However, it was too little too late as Cerritos pulled away and claimed the first set 25-22.

The second set proved to be a back-and-forth affair early on as Cerritos would take a one-point lead seven ties with the Dons grabbing the tie on the next point each time up to a 7-7 tie. The Falcons scored consecutive points for the first time of the set to take a 9-7 lead and wouldn't relinquish the lead for the remainder of the set, going on to win 25-19.

Sparks opened the third set with a kill before Alejandrina Alejandro's service ace gave the Dons an early 2-0 lead. Cerritos came back with two quick points to tie the set 2-2. The Dons then grabbed leads at 3-2 and 4-3 before the Falcons claimed the lead for good at 5-4. The Falcons would continue to build their lead from their before ultimately winning the set, and the match, by a final score of 25-13.

In the match, the Dons were led by Marissa Kohler who had seven kills followed by Christine Chavez with six kills while Alexandra Lopez and Tori Sparks added five kills apiece. Netina Moemoe had 26 digs for the Dons while Lyzette Rodriguez led the way with 12 assists, followed by Violet Falealili with 11 assists.

The Dons stay at home for their next match when they host Southwestern College on September 12 at 7:00 p.m.
