Dons Fall to 0-2 in the OEC Following Straight Set Loss to Irvine Valley

SANTA ANA - The Dons lost to visiting Irvine Valley College in three sets in their second Orange Empire Conference match of the season. The loss drops the Dons to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play while the Lasers improve to 7-1 and 1-1.

Tori Sparks opened the first game with a kill following a long rally before the two teams traded the lead at 2-1 in favor of the Lasers and 3-2 for the Dons. But Irvine Valley used a 10-0 run to establish a 12-3 lead before going on to win the set 25-10.

The Dons took charge of the second set as they jumped out to a 7-2 lead behind an early service ace by Netina Moemoe and a pair of kills by Michelle Nguyen and Marissa Kohler. The Lasers, however, rallied to tie the set at 8-8 before Kohler's kill returned the lead to the Dons at 9-8.

The Lasers continued to tie the match but the Dons answered each time to reclaim the lead on kills by Kohler, Sparks and Danielle Goldowski. It wasn't until a 14-14 tie that the Lasers were able to reclaim their first lead of the set since leading 2-1 in the early stages.

Once the Lasers held that 15-14 lead, they never looked back as they built their lead to as large as five at 21-16. IVC would ultimately win the set 25-19.

The third and final set belonged to Irvine Valley as the Lasers followed a Dons 1-0 lead with a 13-1 run to establish a commanding 13-2 lead. The Dons were only able to get as close as eight points at 15-7 on a Nguyen service ace before the Lasers pulled away for the 25-11 win.

The Dons were led in the loss by Sparks who had five kills followed Kohler and Nguyen with four kills apiece. Violet Falealili set up the most kills for the Dons as she finished with 13 assists.
