Dons Drop Conference Match in Three to Riverside City College

SANTA ANA - The Dons dropped their second-straight Orange Empire Conference match after losing to Riverside City College in three sets. The Tigers (5-5, 1-1) won the match over the Dons (3-7, 0-2) with set scores of 25-12, 25-16 and 25-13.

The Tigers led the first set wire-to-wire as they opened with a 2-0 lead before extending that into a 5-1 lead. Michelle Nguyen cut RCC's lead to just two at 5-3 with a kill but the Tigers would respond, extending their lead to 10-5. Riverside City would continue to pull away, before winning the set 25-12.

The second set opened similar to the first with Riverside grabbing an early lead before a Nguyen kill made the score 5-3 in favor of the visiting team. The Tigers would again establish a 10-5 lead before pulling out to a 20-7 lead.

But the Dons wouldn't surrender the set that easily as they mounted a late rally. Mendoza's kill started the rally to make the score 20-8, sparking a 9-4 run that pulled the Dons within eight at 24-16. But the Tigers would close out the set with the final point, winning 25-16.

In the third set, the Tigers opened with six-straight points before Arroyo's kill snapped the run. Riverside then pulled ahead by 12 at 17-5 before holding an 18-9 lead. The Dons would put together a run late again, but it wasn't enough as the Tigers won the set, and the match, by a final score of 25-13.
