Dons Win Second Set but Lose in Four Games to Cypress College

SANTA ANA - The Dons fell to Cypress College in four sets of an Orange Empire Conference match. Cypress (8-6, 2-3) defeated the Dons (3-10, 0-4) by final scores of 25-20, 23-25, 25-16 and 25-4.

The first set opened with the Chargers building the first lead at 6-2 before the Dons rallied back to tie the set at 8-8. After Cypress broke the tie, the Dons answered with a pair of points on kills by Danielle Goldowski and Iliana Mendoza to take an 11-9 lead.

The Dons then went on a 6-3 run to take a 17-12 lead. Among the points scored on the run were a Bejani Turley kill, a Michelle Nguyen kill and a Alejandrina Alejandro service ace.

But the Chargers would answer with a 9-0 run to overtake the Dons and claim a 21-17 lead. From there, Cypress would go on to win the set by a final score of 25-20.

The Dons reversed their fortunes in the second set as they edged the Chargers 25-23 in a close set. After the Dons opened the set with a 5-1 lead, Cypress came back to tie the set at 5-5 before taking a lead of its own at 8-6.

The Dons would answer with three-straight points to take a 9-8 lead before the Chargers reclaimed the lead at 11-10. Cypress would continue to hold the lead for several points, losing it momentarily when Nguyen tied the set at 15-15 with a kill.

The Chargers would quickly go back up by three at 18-15, continuing to lead until the Dons once again forced a tie at 2-2 with a service ace by Nguyen. Mendoza broke that tie with a kill, sparking a 3-0 run to win the set. The winning point came on a service ace by Esther Arroyo.

The third set continued the back-and-forth action with the teams playing to a 6-6, 7-7, 8-8 and 9-9 ties before the Chargers broke the tie for good with a 4-0 run to establish a 13-9 lead. From there, Cypress would go on to win the set by a score of 25-16.

The Chargers controlled the fourth set from start-to-finish as they won the game, and the match, by a final score of 25-4.
