SANTA ANA, Calif. – The Santa Ana College Football team leaned on its defense to earn its second American Metro League win of the year on Saturday night, as they defeated Los Angeles Southwest College 44-14.
Santa Ana held the Cougars to just 14 points on 197 yards of total offense. The Dons tallied five sacks and two interceptions to dominate on that side of the ball.
Defensive end Brandon Legendre was a big reason why the Dons were successful on Saturday, as he relentlessly put pressure on the opposing quarterbacks and finished with six tackles and three sacks on the night. The sophomore now has nine sacks this season, making him one of the premier pass rushers in the state.
The Dons linebacker core of Marwin Alapati, Efrain Paz and Anthony Koclanakis came to play, combining for 18 tackles and 1.5 sacks to guide the defensive effort for Santa Ana. The secondary also got into the action with defensive back Patrick Campbell returning an interception 100 yards for a touchdown and converted quarterback Kamren Freck getting in at safety and coming up with his first career pick.
By giving up just 14 points, the Dons tied for the least amount of points that they have given up all season.
Offensively, we couldn't expect the Dons to put up the same numbers as they did in last week's 75-point breakout. But we did expect them to be solid, as they were with 349 yards of total offense and five touchdowns.
Quarterback Conner Miller led the charge with three first-half touchdowns and finished with 225 yards before sitting down in the fourth quarter. Deven Boston followed is career night against East LA with another good game, running for 126 yards and a touchdown. And nine different Dons caught a pass for the Dons, with four earning thirty yards or more.
The Dons move to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in league play after tonight's win. They'll go back on the road next Saturday when they play against Glendale College on Oct. 14th in another American Metro League game at 1:00 p.m.
