Dons Blanked at Home 5-0 by Cypress

SANTA ANA - The Dons lost to visiting Cypress College 5-0 in an Orange Empire Conference match. Today was the second straight loss for the Dons in conference play as they fell to 4-3-0 overall and 0-2-0 in conference. Cypress improved to 5-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in conference.

The Chargers first goal came in the 31st minute when Gissel Avila dribbled through SAC's defense and beat the keeper one-on-one for the goal. The Dons nearly tied the match in the 43rd minute, but Alex Peinado's strike from 20-yards out rung off the cross bar. Cypress came back less than a minute later with its second goal as Andrea Castro scored on a Taylor Jones assist to send the Chargers into the break with a 2-0 lead.

Avila scored two more goals in the second half while assisting on a third. She scored in the 56th minute on a Karla Lopez assist before assisting on Layla Silva's goal in the 58th minute. Finally, Avila capped scoring in the 64th minute with Alexis Fuerte getting the assist.

Joey Martinez made eight saves for the Dons in 90 minutes while Paulina Serna and Angeles Alvarez combined in goal for Cypress for the shutout. Neither keeper faced a single shot as Serna played 72 minutes before Alvarez played the final 18 minutes.

The Dons will play their first road conference match on Friday when they travel to Irvine Valley College at 3:00 p.m.
