LEMOORE, Calif. - Alireza Kaveh secured his place in the Santa Ana College record books as he battled through the 149 pound bracket to become the 30th state champion in program history at the 2024 California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) Men's Wrestling State Championship on Saturday, December 14th.
Kaveh, a sophomore out of Aliso Niguel, made his return to the SAC Men's Wrestling program after a four year hiatus following his 8th place finish at the 2019 3C2A State Championships.
The standout worked his way back into contention throughout the season as he improved not only his body but also his mindset. Despite losing four times before reaching the state championship, including getting pinned by his finals opponent, Kaveh wrestled with confidence and poise.
"Mentally, I think this was the biggest challenge I've ever had in my life," Kaveh said. "My losses gave me more knowledge and pushed me to be better than I ever thought I could be."
Kaveh entered the tournament as the 149 pound No. 1 seed in the South after taking the top spot at the Southern California Regionals. He advanced to the finals after two major decisions and a technical fall.
With all eyes on him in the final round, Kaveh went toe to toe with an undefeated opponent in Fresno City's James Wright. After dodging a couple takedown attempts from Wright, Kaveh closed the first period with a 3-0 lead thanks to takedown around the 10 second mark.
He continued to push forward with pressure in the second period, scoring two more points with a reversal to take a 5-0 lead. A couple escapes put Wright on the board but thanks to the early lead, Kaveh was able to wait for his opportunity to counter, which he did with another takedown in the third.
The 149 pound champion finished the bout with a 9-3 win, wrapping up a season to remember.
In addition to taking home the state championship and standing atop the podium, Kaveh was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament.
"I still think I'm dreaming and I don't believe it. I'm grateful for my team, my coaches, my family and the staff. Without their support I don't think I could have accomplished this," said Kaveh.
As a team, the Dons finished 11th overall and had two placers with freshman Ricardo Solorio taking fourth in the 133 pound bracket.
