Dons Sweep Cuyamaca for First Victory of Season

SANTA ANA - The Dons closed out non-conference competition with a straight-set win over visiting Cuyamaca College.  The victory came for the Dons (1-6) by scores of 25-22, 25-18 and 25-23.

After Cuyamaca (0-9) scored the first three points of the match, Chloe Anderson and Madison Logan combined for six of the Dons first 10 points as they took their first lead of the match at 10-9. Cuyamaca would go on to tie the set four more times before reclaiming the lead at 16-15.

The teams continued to trade the lead several more times before Cuyamaca forced a tie at 19-19. But Filana Duvan was able to break that tie with a kill before Anderson added back-to-back kills to put the Dons up 22-19. Cuyamaca got back within one point before the Dons closed out the set, with the help of two more Anderson kills, to win by a score of 25-22.

The opening of the second set belonged to the Dons as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead using two Anderson kills, a Duvan kill and service ace, an Adabella Ruiz kill and a service ace by Shaila Aceves. The Dons went on to build their lead up to 17-9 before Cuyamaca went on a run to cut the lead to just three at 21-18. But the Dons were able to close out the set with a 4-0 run to win 25-18.

The third, and final, set saw the Dons once again building a large lead, this time 18-6, before Cuyamaca came back to tie the set at 20-20. The teams would play to ties of 21-21 and 22-22 before Dayne Bogosian broke the final tie with a kill as the Dons went on to win the set, and the match, by a final score of 25-23.
