Dons Fall to Riverside in Final Game of First Round

SANTA ANA - The first round of Orange Empire Conference competition concluded with the Dons straight-set loss to visiting Riverside City College. The visiting Tigers (10-3, 3-4) defeated the Dons (1-13, 0-7) by scores of 25-6, 25-16 and 25-15.

The Dons recorded points in the first set on kills by Shaila Aceves, Trinh Ngoc Nguyen and Fernanda Ruiz before the Tigers went on to win 25-6. The second set opened with a Riverside point before Filana Duvan's kill tied the set at 1-1.

After the Tigers scored four-straight points to take a 5-1 lead, the Dons answered with three-straight points of their own, capped off with a Madison Logan kill, to make the score 5-4. Ruiz would keep the set close at 7-5 with a kill of her own before Riverside extended its lead to 16-5. The Dons would get kills from Chloe Anderson, Hailey Slater, Duvan and Logan, as well as a service ace by Kathryn Apodaca before the Tigers would win the set 25-16.

In the third set, Anderson snapped Riverside's 3-0 run to open the set with a kill before Logan added a kill of her own. Anderson had one more early kill to make the score 7-4 in favor of Riverside. After the Tigers pulled out to a 15-9 lead, the Dons rallied with four-straight points, including a pair of Anderson kills and a Logan kill, to cut the lead to 15-13. But Riverside would pull away from there as the Tigers went on to win the set, and the match, with a final score of 25-15.
