Dons Fall Short in Battle with Riverside

SANTA ANA, Calif. - The Santa Ana Women's Basketball team stayed within striking distance all night but could not get over the hump as they were defeated by the Riverside City Tigers (18-6, 5-3) by a score of 65-56 all Wednesday night.

SAC (8-14, 3-5) was down by as much as 10 in the first half but chipped away to cut that lead to just one (48-47) after Selena Hernandez knocked down a three with 6:34 left in the game.

Unfortunately, that was as close as the Dons would get as RCC broke out of their scoring drought to go on a 17-9 run to close the game.

Hernandez led the Dons with 21 points, including five made threes, and five rebounds. Sophia Escalante put together another big offensive night with 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting to go with eight boards while Brianna Urena dropped a season high nine assists on the night.

As a team, the Dons shot well from behind the arc, hitting nine threes (42 percent) but suffered from being outrebounded 57-35 and turning over the ball 17 times, leading to the loss.

Santa Ana will now have three straight road games starting with Irvine Valley on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
