Santa Ana Takes the Rustlers to Five Sets on Sophomore Night

SANTA ANA, Calif. – The Santa Ana volleyball team acknowledged its six sophomores before its match against the Golden West Rustlers on Wednesday night as Hannah DeGrasse, Stephanie Huerta, Jasmin Cardona, Stephanie Ozokwo, Karissa Mumford and Carla Carrion played in their final home match at Santa Ana College.

The Dons took the first two sets of the match and looked prime to sweep Golden West for the second time this season, but the momentum quickly turned as the Rustlers responded by taking the last three sets to win it, 3-2 (25-16, 25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 13-15).

Stephanie Ozokwo and Karissa Mumford came up with big performances for the Dons, going for career highs in kills and digs while Jasmin Cardona joined them with a career high in assists. Ozokwo collected 24 kills and 24 digs with two aces and a couple block assists while Mumford went for 11 kills, 20 digs, three block assists and two aces. Cardona posted 51 assists and nine digs in her last home match as a Don.

Freshman Alexis Santos was the only other Don in double digits in the kills category with 12 and also added a dozen digs. Degrasse recorded nine kills but was most impactful on the defense, controlling the net with four solo blocks and five block assists.

Santa Ana will finish the 2018 season with a couple road games next Wednesday (at Cypress) and Friday (at Saddleback) at 6:00 p.m.
