Dons Pitching Staff Shuts Down the Lasers to Complete the Sweep

SANTA ANA, Calif. – It was a total team effort for the Santa Ana College Baseball team on Saturday afternoon, as they shutout the Irvine Valley College Lasers by a score of 7-0 to complete the sweep in their three-game series.

The Dons pitching staff combined for nine scoreless innings, with eight strikeouts, seven hits and just one walk.

Austin Weddle got the start for the Dons and went first two innings, allowing two hits and striking out one. Cole Hoskins was the first out of the bullpen for the Dons and picked up the win by going three innings with one strikeout, a hit and a walk. Next up was Josh Ludeman, who completed the next three innings and recorded a game-high four strikeouts. Gabe Armstrong finished for Santa Ana in the ninth by striking out two to complete the shutout.

The Santa Ana offense was in full effect today, posting two early runs in the first and then adding on to the lead in the later innings.

Nathan Flores put the Dons on the board in the first with a RBI liner down the left field line to score Julio Rivera. Later in the inning, Juan Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Flores for the second run of the inning.

In the fourth, the Dons extended their lead with three runs on three hits. Bobby Vasquez started the rally with a line drive double off the left field fence, and then Derek Reilly drove him with his own double off the fence. Soon after, Rivera capped things off with his third homer of the year to put the Dons up 6-0.

After sweeping the Lasers, Santa Ana has won its last 5 games to improve to 25-12 overall, 9-9 in conference. The Dons will try to stay hot when they head to Riverside College for the first game of their last regular season series on Tuesday, Apr. 25th at 2:00 PM.
