Dons Fall Just Short in 74-73 Overtime Loss to Santa Monica College

SANTA ANA - The Dons fell to visiting Santa Monica College 74-73 in overtime of a non-conference game. The Dons got a free throw late in regulation to tie the game but were unable to overcome Santa Monica's (2-0) three-point shooting in the extra frame.

Santa Monica's J'Myiayah Alston opened overtime with a jump shot before Jordan Roberson-McCanless answered with a jumper of her own to tie the game. Rachel Cain then put the Dons (0-3) up 67-65 with a layup but Santa Monica answered with a layup of its own.

Both teams went into a scoring drought for the next 1:13 before the Corsairs hit back-to-back three-pointers to go up 73-67. The Dons would battle back and get within four points at 74-70 before Celia Duran hit a three-pointer at the buzzer, making the final score 74-73.

Overtime was set up when Tianna Buford hit the first of two free throws with 17 seconds left and Santa Monica leading 63-62. Santa Monica had a look at a three-pointer at the end of regulation, but it rimmed out.

Cain led the way for the Dons with 11 points while three Dons scored nine points. Buford was one of the players with nine points and she also grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.
