Dons Hold on to Defeat Golden West, 86-81

SANTA ANA, Calif. - The Santa Ana College Women's Basketball team had one of its best scoring performances of the season with an 86-81 victory over the Golden West Rustlers (11-9, 1-5) in Orange Empire Conference play on Friday night.

Although outscoring the Rustlers was an important part of the success for the Dons (13-7, 3-3), the real key to the win was the production of their role players, Lucila Medina and Vaimoana Niumeitolu

Medina dominated inside the paint for the Dons as she brought down 13 rebounds to help create 22 second chance points for her team. The freshman forward from Santa Ana High added seven points, a steal, a block and an assist in her fourth start of the season.

The contribution from Niumeitolu, a guard from Long Beach Jordan, was another big aspect of the Dons as her defense and efficiency made a difference throughout the game. She finished with five points on 2-of-3 shooting with five rebounds and two assists in 24 minutes.

Freshman guard Larissa Robles did her job on the offensive end as she scored 32 points to lead the Dons. The standout from Sonora High did most of her damage from the freethrow line where she went 17-of-21. In addition, she recorded five rebounds and four assists in the win.

Santa Ana  also got great production from sophomores Dylyn Payne and Selena Hernandez

Payne posted a career high 27 points to go with four assists and four boards while Hernandez finished with a statline of 15 points, four rebounds, two assists and a block.

The Dons will go on the road to wrap up the first round of OEC play against Cypress (7-13, 3-3) on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
