Dons Fall to Mt. SAC 24-15 as Mounties Win Three of Final Four Matches

SANTA ANA - Just four days after meeting in the final of the South State Duals, the Dons hosted the Mt. San Antonio College Mounties in a South West Conference dual match. Unfortunately for the host Dons (7-6, 1-1), the results were the same as Saturday's as the Mounties (11-2, 2-0) defeated Santa Ana 24-15.

Mt. SAC took the first two weight classes, including a 7-5 win at 133 pounds that was the first loss for SAC's Juan Jaime in his collegiate career, to an early 6-0 lead. But the Dons would battle back with four-straight wins to take a 12-6 lead in the match. However, Mt. SAC would win all but one of the remaining matches, including two pins, to take the 24-15 victory. Match-by-match results are below.

 

125 Pounds – Christian Betancourt (MSAC) def. Christian Hauser (SAC) 6-3

Christian Hauser (SAC) opened the match with a takedown with under a minute in the first period before Christian Betancourt (MSAC) escaped seconds before the period ended. Hauser extended his lead to 3-1 with an escape in the second period, but Betancourt came back to tie the match at 3-3 with a takedown halfway through the period.

Betancourt rode Hauser for the remainder of the second before scoring an escape in the third for his first lead of the match at 4-3. Betancourt took control of the match when he scored a takedown in the final seconds, as he won the match 6-3.

133 Pounds – Nathan Pike (MSAC) def. Juan Jaime (SAC) 7-5

Nathan Pike (MSAC) scored the match's first point on a takedown moments before the buzzer to take a 2-0 lead into the second period. Juan Jaime (SAC) quickly took his first lead halfway through the second period with a quick three points to go up 3-2. But Pike would reclaim the lead at 4-3 with 15 seconds in the period on a reversal.

Pike extended his lead to 6-3 with a reversal to open the third but Jaime would score a reversal of his own to make the score 6-5. Jaime conceded a point with an escape, attempting a final takedown to tie the match. But Jaime ran out of time while attempting his final move as Pike handed him his first collegiate defeat with a 7-5 score.

141 Pounds – Andrew Schulte (SAC) def. Anthony Duran (MSAC 6-3

Andrew Schulte (SAC) wasted no time to score a takedown before conceding an escape to Anthony Duran (MSAC), making the early score 2-1. The two wrestlers took that 2-1 score into the second before Schulte's early escape gave him a 3-1 lead.

Schulte carried his 3-1 lead into the third but Duran scored an escape to cut the lead to 3-2. Then with 50 seconds left, Schulte scored a takedown to go up 5-2 before Duran escaped again to make the score 5-3, which would hold as the final score.

149 Pounds – Richard Miranda (SAC) def. Jonathan Hernandez (MSAC) 7-2

Jonathan Hernandez (MSAC) opened scoring just 10 seconds into the first period with a takedown of Richard Miranda (SAC). Less than a minute later, Miranda would come back with a reversal to tie the match at 2-2. Miranda would score another reversal to open the second period to take his first lead at 4-2.

With just over one minute left in the third period, Miranda scored a takedown to extend his lead to 6-2 before taking a 7-2 win, with a one-point addition for riding time.

157 Pounds – Nathan Mateo (SAC) def. Cyrus Sanai (MSAC) 9-6

Scoring came fast in the 157-pound match with Cyrus Sanai (MSAC) scoring a takedown before Nathan Mateo (SAC) quickly reversed the lead to 3-2 in his favor with an escape and a takedown just 30 seconds into the first period. Sanai would tie the match at 3-3 with an escape with two minutes left in the first before Mateo scored a takedown one minute later to go up 5-3.

Mateo took his 5-3 lead into the second period before extended it to 6-3 just 10 seconds in with an escape. Later, with just under one minute in the second period, Mateo scored a takedown to go up 8-3 before Sanai escaped to cut the lead to 8-4 moments before the end of the period.

After Sanai was awarded a point for a violation, he scored one more point with an escape before Mateo won the match 9-6, with an added point for riding time.

165 Pounds – Jacob Blackwell (SAC) def. Jacob Castillo (MSAC) 5-1

After Jacob Castillo (MSAC) and Jacob Blackwell (SAC) wrestled a scoreless first period, Blackwell scored a takedown just over 30 seconds into the second period. Castillo got on the board later in the period with an escape before Blackwell extended his lead to 4-1 in the final 10 seconds. Blackwell would add one more point with riding time to win 5-1.

174 Pounds – Brody Goens (MSAC) pins Raul Hernandez (SAC)

It took half of the first period, but Raul Hernandez (SAC) would open scoring with a takedown before Brody Goens would score a quick escape followed by a takedown to take a 3-2 lead. Goens would go on end the match with a pin with 38 seconds left in the first period.

184 Pounds – Nathan Rodriguez (MSAC) pins Jonathan Fraser (SAC)

Nathan Rodriguez (MSAC) took a 5-0 lead over Jonathan Fraser (SAC) in the first minute with a takedown and a near fall before scoring another near fall just under a minute later to go up 8-0. Rodriguez would extend his lead to 10-0 in the opening seconds of the second period with a reversal before ending the match with a pin 33 seconds in.

197 Pounds – Juan Hernandez (SAC) def. Jared Matanane (MSAC) 5-2

After two minutes of no scoring, Juan Hernandez (SAC) turned a quick move into a quick two points on a takedown of Jared Matanane (MSAC). The slow pace continued as the next point wasn't scored until 30 seconds into the second period when Matanane escaped, cutting Hernandez' lead to 2-1.

Hernandez extended his lead to 3-1 with an escape with just over one minute left in the match before adding a takedown to go up 5-1. Matanane would score an escape in the final seconds but Hernandez would win 5-2.

285 Pounds – Nader Abdullatif (MSAC) pins Aaron Dubois (SAC)

Nader Abdullatif (MSAC) scored the first points of the match with a takedown before pinning Aaron Dubois to end the match just 1:46 into the first period.
