Santa Ana Upset 2-1 by SMC in Round Two of CCCAA Playoffs

SANTA ANA, Calif. – Miguel Gomez gave the Dons hope when he scored on a header to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 88th minute of their CCCAA Southern Regional second round match against fifth seeded Santa Monica College.

The Dons had one more chance to tie the score with a dangerous free kick in extra time, but fell short as the Corsairs were able to clear the ball, upsetting the Dons to advance to round three of the playoffs.

SMC dominated possession of the ball with 15 shots and seven corners compared to just five shots and zero corners for the Dons.

Frank Aguilar came up with four saves in 90 minutes but couldn't fight off all the Corsair attempts.

Santa Ana's season came to an end after collecting 12 wins, earning a third place finish in the Orange Empire Conference standings and taking the fourth seed in the CCCAA Southern Regionals.

With only six sophomores moving on, the young Santa Ana team is set to return as many as 27 players, (3 All-OEC) for the 2019 season.
