No. 4 Santa Ana Outlasts No. 21 COD, Advance to Super Regionals

SANTA ANA, Calif. - The No. 4 seeded Santa Ana College Baseball team has advanced to the California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) Southern California Super Regionals following a sweep of No. 21 College of the Desert (25-16) with a 5-4 win on Saturday.

In game two of the series, Santa Ana (28-14) outlasted the Roadrunners to pull out the win after 11 innings of intense baseball.

Christian Thompson helped the Dons get off to a good start with a lead off home run to left-center on the second pitch of the game.

SAC added another run in the fourth on an RBI single through the left side from Matthew Dobson. The Dons made it a 3-0 lead when Mikey Rocha came around to score on a fielder's choice by Jimmy De Anda in the sixth inning.

Despite falling behind early, the Roadrunners did not go away easily and responded with their bats in the bottom half of the sixth.

With the bases loaded, COD's Tyler Swan came up big with a three-run double to bring the Roadrunners all the way back to tie the game at 3-3.

From there, the two teams locked in defensively and did not score again until the 11th inning.

Sophomore infielder Marc Schavone finally broke the tie as he pulled a ball over the left center field fence for the go-ahead home run. A couple batters later, Dobson gave the Dons an important insurance run with an opposite field homer, making it a 5-3 game.

COD made it interesting in the bottom half of the inning with one run on a solo shot by William Owens and then loaded the bases with two outs to threaten the lead. But with the game on the line, Santa Ana went to their first team all-conference reliever Joey Iglesias, who shut the door on Desert and picked up his third save of the year.

The Dons have now advanced to their second consecutive Super Regional and will host Cypress College and Santa Barbara City in a three team tournament from Thursday, May 11th through Saturday, May

13th.
