Dons Struggle in Non-Conference Loss to Rio Hondo

SANTA ANA - During a break from Orange Empire Conference play, the Dons lost to visiting Rio Hondo College 8-1 in a non-conference game. The loss drops the Dons to 6-10 while Rio Hondo improves to 5-13.

The Roadrunners came out with five runs, three earned, in the second inning on five hits while getting help from two SAC errors. The damage was ultimately stopped when Mercedes Munoz, Karina Munoz and Christina McCullogh teamed up to throw out a runner at second base following a single to centerfield.

Mercedes Munoz scored in the bottom of the second inning after reaching second base on an error before scoring on a RBI-single by Karina Munoz. However, it would prove to be the only run of the game for the Dons.

Rio Hondo added three more runs, two earned, in the sixth inning using another Dons error while putting together three hits. Once again, it was Mercedes Munoz who ended the rally when she made a running catch in centerfield before throwing out a runner at home for the double play.

The Dons would load the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning when Alexandra Hernandez was hit by a pitch before Tina Ramos and McCullogh each hit infield singles. However, the game would come to an end in the next at bat on a groundout to second base.

Desiree Hernandez (4-5) took the loss for the Dons as she allowed eight runs, five earned, on 10 hits over seven innings. Brenae Martinez (4-12) got the win for Rio Hondo as she held the Dons to one unearned run on six hits.
