Dons Can’t Complete Comeback, Falling to OCC in 5

SANTA ANA, Calif. – The Santa Ana College Volleyball team put forth a great effort in Wednesday's Orange Empire Conference matchup with Orange Coast College.

The Dons pushed the Pirates to five sets after trailing 2-0 to start the match but couldn't quite complete the comeback, losing the last set 15-8.

Santa Ana played the Pirates tough in the first two sets but didn't really start to take the momentum until the score was 16-16 in the third.

Uchenna Ozokwo and Virideana Pacheco changed the game with block assists that started the Santa Ana run. The Dons continued to dominate the net from then on out, racking up 16 block assists and five solo blocks in the match.

In the fourth set, the Dons stuck to their game plan and made another run to go up 22-15 and eventually win the set 25-18.

With all the momentum in their favor, Santa Ana looked to close out the match and earn their second conference win of the season. The fifth set did not go as planned for the Dons, as they fell behind early and just couldn't catch up.

Standouts for the Dons included setter Jasmin Cardona, who had 32 assists, two aces and 15 digs while Mikelle Taylor led the in kills again with 16 to go along with 21 digs.

Kayla Long also had a good day with an ace and 19 digs, and Uchenna Ozokwo provided some energy for Santa Ana with nine kills, three digs and four block assists.

The Dons are now 8-8 overall and 1-6 in the OEC. They'll be home again on Friday when they host Cypress College at 6:00 p.m.
