Late Offensive Surge Gives Dons 5-1 Victory over Cerritos College

SANTA ANA - With the teams deadlocked at 1-1 in the fifth inning, Alyssa Yglesias provided the base hit that helped lead the Dons to a 5-1 win over Cerritos College. The Dons are now 5-1 on the season while Cerritos falls to 3-4, despite being ranked ahead of the Dons in the preseason poll.

The Dons struck first with Yglesias leading the first inning off with a single and a stolen base before eventually scoring on a RBI-groundout by Sabrina Perez. The Falcons tied the game at 1-1 in the second on Ariana Mejia's solo home run.

After Yglesias delivered the go-ahead run in the fifth, the Dons padded their lead in the sixth inning starting with a solo home run by Alexandra Perkins. Perez then reached on an error and was replaced by pinch runner Natalie Valdez who came around to score on Marissa Ross' triple. Later in the inning, Chantal Oelrich scored on a RBI-single by Heather Robertson to cap the Dons scoring.

Oelrich (3-1) picked up the win for the Dons as she pitched three innings in relief without allowing a run. Lily Cornejo (0-2) took the loss for Cerritos, allowing all five runs on five hits in five innings.

The Dons start a five-game road trip tomorrow when they travel to East Los Angeles College at 2:00 p.m.
