Dons Unable to Hold Late Lead in 4-3 Loss to Canyons

SANTA ANA - The Dons were one out away from winning their home opener, and their first game of the season, before allowing a three-run double in the seventh to lose 4-3 to visiting College of the Canyons. The loss drops the Dons to 0-5 on the season while Canyons is now 1-0.

The Cougars struck first with a run in the first inning when leadoff batter Cheyenne Steward singled before taking second on a sacrifice bunt. She would eventually come around to score on a RBI-double by Jennifer Metcalf.

But the Dons would answer with a run in the second, capitalizing on a leadoff walk. Annie Dowling drew the walk before taking second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Andrea Mendoza singled Dowling in from second to tie the game at 1-1.

In the next inning, the Dons would take their first lead of the game at 2-1 when Vanessa Moreno reached on an error allowing Emily Whitecavage to score. Whitecavage had led the third inning off with a single before stealing second base. She would move to third on a groundout by Marissa Moser before scoring on the error.

The Dons extended their lead to 3-1 in the sixth inning with Dowling reaching on a one-out error before Emma Silvestri, who run for Dowling, moved to second on a Tori Ferguson groundout. Mendoza later reached on an error with Silvestri scoring on the play.

Going into the final frame, the Dons recorded two outs in the first three batters before a single and a hit by pitch loaded the bases. Steward then doubled in all three runs, putting Canyons up 4-3. The Dons were then retired in order to end the game.
