Dons Grind Out 6-4 Win over Mt. San Jacinto College

The Dons held a lead as large as 6-1 before holding on for a 6-4 victory over visiting Mt. San Jacinto College in a non-conference game. The win came in the first of two games for the Dons in the Hard Ball Classic.

The Eagles (11-13) took the first lead of the game in the second inning on a solo home run by Adam Balliger. But the Dons (20-7) would come back with a pair of three-run innings to establish the early lead.

Konnor Armijo drew a bases loaded walk to score Kyle Kuck, tying the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second. JB Bryant then hit into a double play that scored Dylan Jones, giving the Dons a 2-1 lead. Finally, Adrian Garcia scored on an Eagles error to put the Dons up 3-1, despite being held hitless in the inning.

The lead grew to 6-1 in the third inning with Tyler Madrid providing the fireworks. After Andy Peterson drew a leadoff walk, Madrid took a 3-1 pitch over the fence in right field to put the Dons up 5-1.

Jones, who singled to centerfield, scored the sixth run for the Dons later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Bryant. That would prove to be the final run of the game for the Dons.

Mt. San Jacinto got a run across in the fourth inning on a wild pitch before another solo home run, this time by Garrett Veiga, cut the Dons lead to 6-3 in the fifth inning.

The Eagles scored again in the eighth inning to cut the lead to 6-4 before Matt Blanchard struck out the side in the ninth for his second save of the season.

Garrett Porter (1-0) picked up his first decision of the season in a controlled start. Porter pitched 3.2 innings while allowing two runs on two hits with three strikeouts.

Miguel Navarro (4-5) suffered the loss for Mt. San Jacinto after allowing five runs, four earned, on two hits over two innings. He also walked six batters.
